U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed a major diplomatic victory with the Gaza ceasefire, but cracks are already appearing in what he called the “new West Asia.”

The truce between Israel and Hamas has held for now, enabling a swap of prisoners and hostages. Yet Trump’s recent threat to “kill” Hamas fighters if violence continues has cast doubt over the durability of the peace.

His remarks came after disturbing reports emerged from Gaza, where Hamas is accused of executing suspected looters and collaborators in public squares. Although Trump initially brushed off the crackdown as an internal matter, he later condemned the killings as a violation of the peace deal — a reversal that reflects growing criticism from U.S. lawmakers and Israeli officials.

The U.S.-brokered plan requires Hamas to disarm and withdraw from governing Gaza, but the group shows no sign of doing so. Analysts warn that without a clear enforcement mechanism, the ceasefire risks collapsing under competing narratives of control and legitimacy.
