South Sudan Disability Union Urges Economic Empowerment Measures

The Union of Persons with Disabilities in South Sudan has urged the government to incorporate economic empowerment measures into the 2025/26 national budget.

Chairperson Augustino Wudu Elario told lawmakers that persons with disabilities face significant economic disadvantages and require structured financial support. He referenced South Sudan’s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which commits governments to ensuring equal rights and opportunities.

Wudu proposed allocating funds for entrepreneurship initiatives, assistive devices, and institutional support such as hearing centers. He emphasized that disability can affect anyone and should be recognized as a societal issue.

Government representatives acknowledged the absence of a dedicated budget line but said relevant ministries oversee programs benefiting vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities.

The discussion highlights ongoing efforts to align national budgets with international human rights commitments.
