Charles Muhangi Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards
The late rally legend, Charles Muhangi, has been posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards for September 2024. Muhangi, who passed away in 2018, remains an iconic figure in Ugandan motorsport, holding the distinction of being the first and only Ugandan to win the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) in 1999—a record that stands to this day.
At the awards ceremony, held on October 8, 2024, at Lazo Restaurant in Kololo, his widow, Petience Muhangi, accepted the award on behalf of the family, cementing Muhangi’s legacy in the Ugandan sports world.

Football: Herbert Assimwe’s Stellar Performance Secures Football Accolade
Herbert Assimwe, a standout forward for Wakiso Giants, was named Footballer of the Month for September. The talented player, nicknamed “Camavinga,” consistently impressed throughout the Startimes Uganda Premier League, scoring in every game he played. His notable performances included goals against Mbale Heroes, Brightstars, and a brace against Maroons.
Assimwe’s impact extended beyond league play, as he also contributed two goals for Buwekula in the Airtel Masaza Cup. His stellar form saw him surpass other nominees such as Said Mayanja from KCCA FC and Enock Ssebagala from NEC FC.
In his acceptance speech, Assimwe expressed gratitude, stating, “Being nominated is a huge honor, but winning is even more special. This award is the result of hard work and team effort at Wakiso Giants, and I dedicate it to the Purple Sharks family.”

Herbert Matovu took home the Boxer of the Month award for his dominant victory over Tanzania’s Kheri Mbaruku in the Africa Boxing Union (ABU) regional title fight. Held at YMCA on September 7, 2024, as part of the Sweet Science Fights organized by Nara Promotion, Matovu claimed victory with a first-round knockout.
Matovu’s remarkable performance earned him the award ahead of other contenders, including Uganda Boxing Champions League fighters Ukasha Matovu and Owen Kibira.
Woodball: Isaac Ariho Guides Uganda Prisons to Third League Title
In the Woodball category, Isaac Ariho delivered an exceptional performance in September, helping Uganda Prisons secure their third consecutive Woodball League trophy. Ariho lost only one of his seven matches during the month, beginning with a dominant 7-0 victory over Fred Turyakira at Luzira and wrapping up with key wins over Simon Peter Otim of Stroke and Delick Ankunda of Ndejje at the final event held at Makerere University.
Ariho’s versatility was further showcased in the doubles matches, where he teamed up with Abednego Okello to defeat the KIU duo of Bruno Ssekidde and Timothy Suuna. He also partnered with Isaac Nabugere to beat KU’s Matthias Wahala and Raphael Kanabahirwa.
